Lukla Airport: The adventurous gateway to Mount Everest
Lukla Airport, located in the eastern part of Nepal's Solukhumbu district, has been operational since 1973. This airport is used not only by local residents to travel there but also serves as an important gateway to the world's highest peak, Mount Everest.
The airport was later renamed Tenzing-Hillary Airport, after Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary, who were the first to summit Mount Everest. Its elevation is 2,846 meters (9,337 feet) above sea level. Although this airport is often considered one of the most dangerous airports in the world, in reality it is not as dangerous as commonly believed. The runway is about 527 meters (1,729 feet) long and 20 meters (66 feet) wide.
After landing here, tourists and trekkers use this airport to reach some of the most famous trekking routes in the Everest region, including Everest Base Camp, the Three Passes trek, the Gokyo Lakes trek, the Gokyo-Everest Base Camp trek, and the Cho La Pass-Everest Base Camp trek, as well as the Amadablam Base Camp trek. It is also used by climbers heading to summit peaks such as Mount Everest, Mount Nuptse, Mount Lhotse, Mount Cholatse, Mount Amadablam, and Mount Thamserku, along with Lobuche Peak.
It used to be mandatory to use this airport to reach and return quickly from Everest Base Camp and the other trekking routes, since the journey otherwise took more than 18 days. However, now that a road network has reached nearby areas, it is also possible to travel by road.
In the past, travelers were often badly affected when the weather there deteriorated, but now, with the road network available as an alternative, they can travel by road if flights are disrupted.
There is a direct flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, with a flight duration of 25 to 30 minutes. However, during the busy seasons, autumn (October to November) and spring (March to April), flights operate from Manthali Airport in Ramechhap district instead. Manthali Airport is about a four-hour drive from Kathmandu city, and the flight from Manthali to Lukla takes about 15 minutes.
At the end of their journey in the Everest region, tourists enjoy delicious food at the good hotels and restaurants there, and in the evening they visit places for dancing and singing to unwind after their trek.
