Trekking Difficulty Levels in Nepal

Nepal is one of the world’s most popular trekking destinations, offering an incredible range of landscapes and altitudes—from the lowlands to the summit of Mount Everest at 8,848.86 meters. With such a wide variety of trekking routes, the difficulty of each trek can be very different.

At Pure Sherpa Adventure, we use trekking grades to help our guests choose a route that matches their fitness, experience, and expectations. The difficulty of a trek depends on several factors, including altitude, distance, walking hours, trail conditions, remoteness, daily elevation gain, and the amount of time spent at higher elevations.

Our trekking grades range from Easy to Challenging. Before choosing a trek, we recommend considering your physical fitness, previous trekking experience, and ability to walk for several hours a day. If you are unsure which trek is right for you, our team will be happy to help you choose a suitable route.

Grade 1 – Easy

Easy treks are suitable for people who maintain a reasonably active lifestyle and do not have previous trekking experience. These routes generally stay at lower elevations, usually between around 900 and 2,500 meters.

Walking is normally around 4–6 hours per day, with relatively easy trails and gradual ascents. These treks are a good choice for beginners, families, couples, and older travelers who are physically fit and comfortable walking for several hours.

Grade 2 – Moderate

Moderate treks are a little more demanding than easy treks and usually involve longer walking days and more elevation gain. Walking can range from around 5–7 hours per day, with elevations generally reaching approximately 1,500 to 3,200 meters.

Some previous hiking or trekking experience is helpful, although you do not need to be an experienced mountaineer. Anyone who is physically fit and comfortable walking on hills can usually enjoy a moderate trek with proper preparation.

Grade 3 – Strenuous

Strenuous treks are suitable for people with good physical fitness and some previous trekking experience. These routes can involve longer climbs, steeper sections, and higher elevations.

You may walk around 5–6 hours a day, with some routes reaching elevations of approximately 4,000 meters or more. Proper acclimatization becomes increasingly important at this level.

If you have any medical condition that could be affected by physical exertion or high altitude, we recommend consulting your doctor before undertaking a strenuous trek.

Grade 4 – Very Strenuous

Very Strenuous treks require a good level of fitness and previous experience with mountain hiking. Routes in this category can reach approximately 3,500 to 5,500 meters and may include steep climbs, rugged terrain, snow-covered trails, or high mountain passes.

Walking is generally around 5–6 hours per day, although some days can be longer and more demanding. Good preparation, appropriate equipment, acclimatization, and the support of an experienced trekking team are important for these journeys.

These treks are best suited to trekkers who are comfortable walking in remote and high-altitude environments.

Grade 5 – Challenging

Challenging treks are the most demanding level in our grading system. They are designed for trekkers with excellent physical fitness, strong endurance, and previous experience in high-altitude and remote mountain environments.

These journeys may involve elevations above 5,500 meters, glaciers, snow, steep terrain, high mountain passes, and, depending on the itinerary, technical climbing sections. Some Grade 5 adventures may also include peak climbing or mountaineering.

Trekkers should be prepared to carry a backpack, walk on snow and ice, and deal with changing mountain conditions. Previous high-altitude trekking or mountaineering experience is strongly recommended.

For these adventures, proper acclimatization, technical equipment, experienced guides, and full logistical support are essential.

Choose the Right Trek for You

Every trekker is different. A route that feels easy for an experienced hiker may be challenging for someone trekking for the first time.
